Technical guides for every engineering plastic category
High-Temperature Plastics
High-temperature engineering plastics retain mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and electrical properties at temperatures where commodity plastics like ABS or Nylon begin to soften and deform. PEEK leads the category with continuous service up to 250°C, followed by PEI/Ultem at 170°C and PVDF at 150°C. These materials are used in aerospace brackets and insulation, automotive under-bonnet components exposed to engine heat, semiconductor wafer-handling equipment, and industrial oven or autoclave parts — anywhere sustained heat would cause standard thermoplastics to warp, creep, or lose strength.
Chemical-Resistant Plastics
Chemical-resistant plastics are selected based on which acids, alkalis, or solvents they need to withstand, since no single material resists everything equally well. PTFE and PVDF offer the broadest resistance, remaining largely inert to acids, bases, and most organic solvents — the default choice for aggressive chemical environments. HDPE and PP resist a narrower range, strong against most acids and alkalis but more vulnerable to certain solvents, while remaining far more cost-effective for large fabricated components like tanks and piping. These materials are essential in chemical processing plants, pharmaceutical manufacturing, water treatment facilities, and electroplating lines where metal equipment would corrode.
Wear & Load-Bearing Plastics
Wear and load-bearing plastics are engineered for low friction and high fatigue resistance in moving mechanical parts — gears, bushings, rollers, and slide pads — where metal-on-metal contact would require constant lubrication. Nylon PA6 and PA66 offer high impact strength and are the most commonly specified; POM (Acetal/Delrin) provides tighter dimensional stability and lower moisture absorption for precision parts. Oilon, an oil-impregnated cast nylon, is self-lubricating and suited to continuous-duty bearings that can't be serviced regularly. UHMWPE tops the group for pure abrasion resistance, used in chute liners and wear strips subjected to constant sliding contact.
Electrical Insulation Plastics
Electrical insulation plastics are chosen for dielectric strength — their ability to resist electrical breakdown — combined with dimensional stability under the heat generated by current-carrying components. Bakelite, a paper-based phenolic laminate, and Hylam, a cotton-fabric phenolic, are cost-effective options long used in switchboards and general insulation. Glass Epoxy (FR4/G10/G11) is the modern standard for printed circuit board substrates, offering higher dielectric strength and lower moisture absorption than phenolic laminates. Related glass-polyester grades such as GPO-3 add arc and track resistance, making them preferred for switchgear and high-voltage insulation. PEI/Ultem is used where insulation and high-temperature performance are both required at once.
Food-Safe & FDA-Compliant
Food-safe and FDA-compliant plastics are certified for direct contact with food products, meaning they won't leach harmful substances into food during processing, packaging, or handling. PTFE's FDA approval and non-stick surface make it common in food-processing machinery and conveyor components. POM (Delrin) and PET (Ertalyte) are certified food-contact grades used for precision parts in packaging and bottling equipment. HDPE and PP, both widely used in food containers and processing equipment, combine food-contact approval with chemical resistance and low cost — standard choices across food manufacturing, packaging machinery, and pharmaceutical handling.
Transparent & Optical
Transparent and optical plastics are selected primarily for light transmission and clarity, with impact resistance as the key trade-off between the two main options. Acrylic (PMMA) offers the highest optical clarity of any plastic — over 92% light transmission — making it the standard for display cases, signage, and glazing where appearance matters most. Polycarbonate trades a small amount of clarity for dramatically higher impact resistance, making it the choice for safety guards, machine sight glasses, and protective barriers where breakage is a real risk. Both are available as sheets, rods, and tubes for fabrication into custom parts.
